The Scooms 100% Pure Cotton mattress protector is a lovely looking thing, made entirely from cotton and offering a comfortable and cool night’s sleep. I think it’s one of the best mattress protectors on the market but it’s not waterproof and does come with a higher price tag than many of its competitors.
Is it worth the money? In many ways, yes but with the caveat that if you’re looking for a waterproof protector, this isn’t the option for you. Curious to find out more? Then read on…
Scooms 100% Pure Cotton mattress protector: What you need to know
The protector is delivered in recyclable packaging and comes in a drawstring bag for ease of storage. The protector itself is made from cotton, with a 200-thread count quilted surface and 200gsm cotton filling to provide a comfortable cushioned surface. The elasticated skirt, also 100% cotton, is designed to fit mattresses up to 40cm deep: I’m currently sleeping on the 33cm Slumberland Air 6.0 mattress with the 6cm Dorma Full Forever mattress topper, and found the Scooms fitted like a dream. The protector is also OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified, meaning it’s been manufactured completely free of any harmful substances.
The Scooms protector is not a budget option. Starting at £55 for a single, this rises to £65 for a double, £75 for a king, £85 for a super king and £105 for an Emperor. This makes it one of the most expensive protectors we’ve reviewed: while it’s only £20 more than the Nectar mattress protector in a double (£45), the Panda Bamboo mattress protector in the same size costs £37 while the Dusk Luxury Quilted mattress protector retails at only £20.
There’s no trial period, but the protector does come with a one-year guarantee in case of any manufacturing defects. It’s washable at 30-40°C and can be air dried or tumble dried on a low heat.
How well does it work?
To ensure consistency, I carry out the same tests on all mattress protectors to see how waterproof they are. I sandwiched the mattress protector between two old polycotton sheets and combined instant coffee granules with water in various increments (1.5tsp of coffee to 25ml of water, 3tsp to 50ml, 4.5tsp to 75ml and 6tsp to 100ml), before pouring these solutions over the top sheet. I then waited five minutes before measuring the size of the stain on the protector compared to any stain on the under sheet from where the coffee had seeped through.
Like the Dusk protector I mentioned previously, the Scooms 100% Pure Cotton mattress protector is not designed to be waterproof. As such, it wasn’t a great surprise to see that the coffee had seeped through and spread out into a stain – for example, the 100ml solution produced a stain of 36x30cm on the protector, and a 43x30cm stain on the bottom sheet. Fortunately, it washes well, and after one wash at 40°C, the stains had disappeared. I also found that it air dried much quicker than the Dusk protector I reviewed previously.
Despite not being waterproof, the breathable cotton design is more than enough to keep your mattress free of dead skin cells and body oils, as long as it’s washed regularly. But again, I wouldn’t recommend this protector to toilet training children!
What’s it like to sleep on?
The Scooms protector was completely silent to sleep on, with no annoying crinkling noises and a smooth finish from dusk till dawn. It also doesn’t move at all during the night, thanks to that nice deep skirt keeping it firmly in place. With its generous sizing, it covered my mattress perfectly and it feels luxurious to the touch. I did notice a couple of loose threads, but this is perhaps being picky.
My hot-sleeping husband found this protector cool and comfortable thanks to its 100% cotton construction (a much more breathable material than synthetic alternatives). It also felt quite cool to the touch and regulated our temperature well throughout the night – keeping him cool and me (the resident reptile) perfectly comfortable. As such, it’s a great all-rounder, however hot or cold you sleep.
Should I buy the Scooms 100% Pure Cotton mattress protector?
The Scooms 100% Pure Cotton mattress protector is a fantastic choice for those looking to add a little bit of luxury protection to their mattress. It’s beautifully made, silent to sleep on and generously sized to fit all mattresses. Hot sleepers will love it too.
This said, it’s not waterproof and there’s no getting away from the price. A good quality, all-cotton construction is worth the investment in the long term, but if your budget is tight consider the Dusk Luxury Quilted mattress protector. And if waterproofing is a priority, opt for the Nectar or Panda protectors.
