GoPro Hero+ loses the LCD and knocks down the price

GoPro Hero+

GoPro has announced a new Hero+ entry-level action camera as well as a substantial price drop for the Hero4 Session

GoPro now has six different action cameras vying for your adrenaline-backed wallet with its latest addition being the Hero+. The new action camera isn’t too dissimilar to the company’s existing Hero+LCD but, as you can probably guess, it’s sans the LCD touchscreen display of its more expensive compatriot.

While the Hero+LCD retails for around £250, the new Hero+ will be available for £170 when it goes on sale on October 4th. Notably, the Hero+ sits above the GoPro Hero in GoPro’s hierarchy of action cameras. Importantly, it supports Wi-Fi, enabling you to connect it to your smartphone to use the GoPro companion app as a remote control as well as sharing content from the camera.

Like the Hero+LCD and plain GoPro Hero, the Hero+ comes in a non-removable waterproof case, which differs from the Hero4 Silver and Hero4 Black, which can both be taken out of their casing when you’re not partaking in aqua-based activities.

Unsurprisingly, the Hero+ won’t compare to GoPro’s more higher-end action cameras, but it’s still capable of 1080p, 60fps footage, as well as 8MP stills. The Hero only supports 1080p, 30fps for comparison’s sake. The integrated waterproof case will allow you to safely to depths of 40m and GoPro’s convenient QuikCapture function makes a welcome return and I was particularly fond of on the GoPro Hero4 Session. This lets you start recording or capturing timelapse images just by hitting the shutter button even if the camera is turned off. The Hero+ will also work with all of GoPro’s wide array of mounts.

With the inclusion of the Hero+, GoPro’s action camera stable now looks like:

  • HERO4 Black:  Pro-quality capture. Simply the best.     £409.99
  • HERO4 Silver:  High-performance capture. Touch-display convenience.   £329.99
  • HERO4 Session:  GoPro Performance, Simplified.  £249.99
  • HERO+LCD:  The perfect entry-level GoPro + Wi-Fi + touch-display convenience.    £249.99
  • HERO+:   The perfect entry-level GoPro + Wi-Fi.    £169.99
  • HERO:  The perfect entry-level GoPro. £109.99

The introduction of the Hero+ ahead of Christmas getaways makes sense as there was a big price gap between the entry-level Hero and the Hero+LCD and Hero4 Session. With plenty of competition from other action cameras around the £200 price range, such as the great-value Veho Muvi K2NPNG, the GoPro Hero+ now gives adrenaline junkies another option.

GoPro Hero4 Session no case

It’s worth noting that the Hero4 Session has also seen a pretty considerable price drop to £250 from its original launch price of £330. This makes it a consideraly more enticing prospect as the original price encroached on the more capable Hero4 Silver. If you like your action cameras small and light, I loved the form factor and design, so it’s a solid choice if you don’t quite need the improved image quality of the Silver or Black.
