This is the best iPhone XR deal ahead of Black Friday

The iPhone XR is still a top-notch smartphone, and it’s getting more affordable

Apple products – and especially iPhones – aren’t usually significantly discounted until they’re so slow that you’d be better off stumping up the money for something newer. This Fonehouse deal bucks that trend, and while the iPhone XR is no longer the joint-fastest iPhone available, it’s still more than a match for most Android rivals.

But let’s get to the offer: You pay £45 upfront, and then £33 per month in exchange for the 64GB iPhone XR with unlimited minutes, texts and 50GB worth of data on the EE network each month. If 50GB of data doesn’t sound like enough, then you can get the same deal with 75GB of data for £3 more each month and no upfront cost.

To save you the maths, over the duration of a 24-month contract, that comes to £837 for the 50GB package or £864 for the 75GB version. The phone alone is £599 SIM-free, and while there are no 50 or 75GB SIM-free packages on EE, an unlimited data version would cost £34 per month. Add those together and you’re looking at £1,415 – so both these deals represent a significant saving.

But what of the iPhone XR itself? Is getting 2018’s ‘budget’ iPhone sensible at the tail end of 2019? Well, while you’ll always find a cheaper Android device of a similar calibre, it’s worth reflecting on how powerful the XR was and still is. It used the same A12 Bionic processor as the more expensive Xs and Xs Max models, which left most Android devices in the dust at the time. Even today, it’s still a beast in power terms – here it is against the new iPhone 11 Pro and two Android heavy hitters in our GFXBench benchmark:
In other words, no, you don’t need to worry about the iPhone XR being a slouch in the performance stakes. As our head of reviews, Jonathan Bray, wrote in our review: “It’s far cheaper than the Xs and Xs Max and, although the screen isn’t quite as good, the camera doesn’t have a zoom and it’s ever so slightly less water-resistant, I’d recommend saving your money. The iPhone XR is more than good enough.”

This contract makes that argument all the more compelling.
