AOC e2462Vwh review

AOC’s e2462Vwh is a 23.6in 1,920×1,080 monitor with a TN panel. We didn’t particularly like our review model’s white plastic rear, but its glossy black bezel helps to keep it looking smart. You can also buy the monitor with a matt black rear.

The screen itself is quite slim, measuring just 13mm at its thinnest point, but its 210mm-deep stand will require a bit more room on your desk. The screen isn’t height-adjustable, but there’s a small amount of tilt to help you get the best viewing angle. Its plastic stand isn’t very heavy, though, which means the monitor doesn’t stay planted very firmly on your desk, and the screen tends to wobble when you adjust the screen tilt and press the menu buttons.

Around the back, the monitor has single VGA and HDMI inputs and a 3.5mm headphone jack concealed in a small alcove in the base of the stand. The lack of a DVI adaptor means you may need to buy an inexpensive DVI to HDMI adaptor to use it with your PC (like the StarTech.com F/M HDMI to DVI-D Video Cable Adapter from www.amazon.co.uk). This helps keep your wires tidy, but the plastic casing covering the wires is very hard to remove once you’ve clipped it in place.

We were pleased with the monitor’s overall image quality. Our colour calibrator revealed it was showing 92.9% of the sRGB colour gamut straight out of the box. This is above average for a TN panel, but our colour gamut graphs revealed it fell quite short on the red section of the sRGB colour space compared to its blue and green coverage. We managed to reclaim more red space after calibration, though, increasing its overall coverage to a much more impressive 98.1%. This level of accuracy is on a par with screens costing £250 and above with more expensive IPS panels.

Our subjective image tests were also encouraging. The screen’s matt finish means it suffers less from reflections than a glossy panel, but colours aren’t quite as vivid as they would be on a glossy display. However, reds, greens and blues were still bright and uniform across the screen and our blacks showed no evidence of backlight bleeding. Whites, on the other hand, had a slight grey tinge. Blacks were a little deeper, but the black level of 0.71cd/m² we recorded is also a little high for our liking. We could still see a reasonable level of detail in our high contrast images, though, despite measuring a relatively low contrast ratio of 226:1.

Adjusting the screen’s image settings is easy. There’s even the option of changing the screen’s setting using your PC instead of the four buttons on the underside of the bezel if you install its bundled-in iMenu software, which makes tweaking image quality easier.

We’re not sure about the AOC e2462Vwh’s looks and it’s a shame there’s no DVI input, but it has decent image quality at a competitive price. It’s a Budget Buy.
