Virgin Media provides broadband services over its cable network. It also provides ADSL broadband through phone lines, although there weren't enough respondents using the ADSL services for us to pass judgement on them.
Virgin Media offers three broadband packages at three different speeds: M, L and XL. M supports download speeds of up to 2Mbit/s, but managed 2.16Mbit/s in our survey. L currently supports up to 4Mbit/s (although this will soon be upgraded to 10Mbit/s) and got 3.79Mbit/s in our survey. Finally, XL supports up to 20Mbit/s, and our respondents saw average speeds of 11.78Mbit/s.
There are no download limits on any of Virgin's cable broadband packages. XL was also the fastest service here, and easily justifies its £20 a month price. At present XL overshadows L, making the middle package look expensive. At only £4.50 a month, the M package is great value for those who need a basic connection.
Virgin has a bewildering array of deals for its various cable services, so you may find an even better bargain. However, if you're a Virgin cable customer, you should take advantage of its broadband service.
