Sony HDR-PJ790V camcorder leads 2013 range, kills off standard definition

Sony has announced its line-up of camcorders for 2013, with the entire range consisting of high definition models capable of capturing Full HD 1080p clips. It effectively ends the era of standard definition filming, but introduces a multitude of new models with extra features such as integrated projectors and 5.1 microphones.
The flagship HDR-PJ790V has a Full HD 24.1-megapixel Exmor R CMOS sensor which can capture 1080p video at 60 frames per second, as well as display them using a built in 35 lumen projector. It can throw an image 100in wide for when you want to share your footage but have left your cables at home. A top-mounted 5.1 microphone will capture audio in surround sound, and you'll be able to record a massive 38 hours of video on the 96GB of embedded flash memory.
This is closely followed by the HDR-PJ650V, which uses a 20.4-megapixel Exmor sensor, exchanges the 35 lumen projector for a slightly less powerful 20lm model, and reduces the amount of flash memory to 32GB. You still get a built-in 5.1 microphone, as well as integrated Wi-Fi.
For anyone looking to capture special moments in three dimensions, the HDR-TD30V can record in 3D at full 1080p. It can play back 2D video at full resolution, or you can watch your clips in 3D using the 3.5in LCD without the need for glasses.
The rest of the range jettison integrated flash storage for removable memory cards, remove the projector and surround sound microphone and drop the image sensor, but every model is able to capture 1080p footage at a full 60 frames per second.
Sony is staggering the launch across January, February and March, with prices starting at $249 and reaching $1599 for the top-end HDR-PJ790V in the US. There's currently no word about UK pricing or availability. We only caught a very brief glimpse of the line-up at Sony's press conference, but plan on taking a closer look tomorrow when the CES show floor opens to the press.
