Samsung’s Galaxy Fold is relaunching at last

Samsung’s Galaxy Fold has been plagued with teething issues since its almost-release earlier in the year. Thankfully, it looks like these issues have finally been sorted: at long last, a release date has been announced at tech showcase IFA.

Initial problems began after samples of the device experienced both screen and hardware malfunctions, prompting Samsung and other stores to cancel preorders of the Galaxy Fold. This pushed back its initial April 2019 release date and we’ve been waiting patiently for its return ever since.

It’s been a long few months since the initial debacle but today Samsung finally announced that the Galaxy Fold will be available in Korea from tomorrow (6 September), with select countries – including the UK – getting the device on 18 September. In the UK, you can pre-register your interest for the Samsung Galaxy Fold now.

New additions to the Fold include an extra protective layer on top of the device’s Infinity Flex display – review samples featured a similar layer, which many unwitting journalists mistook for a removable screen protector.  

Samsung explained that the new design would come with further reinforcements to better protect it from “external particles.” The South Korean firm claims to have made the changes without compromising the unique flexibility of the phone.

When the Fold does finally hit UK shelves later this month it’ll be available in two colours: cosmos black and space silver. Some countries will also be getting a 5G-ready option, although it’s not clear which ones as of yet.

What to expect from the Samsung Galaxy Fold

The Galaxy Fold will be released with OS Android 9 Pie, although with Android 10 currently rolling out across Pixel devices, a software update could be imminent. Specifications probably won’t come as much of a surprise to most, as they remain unchanged since the original announcement. 

There’s a 4.6in HD+ Super AMOLED cover display, while the main bendy display is a QXGA+ Dynamic AMOLED that measures a healthy 7.3in.

For photos you’ve got a 10-megapixel selfie camera and an 8-megapixel RGB depth camera on the front, with a rear triple camera array on the back. This comprises a 14-megapixel ultra-wide lens, a 12-megapixel wide-angle lens and 12-megapixel telephoto lens.

The Fold comes with 12GB RAM and 512GB internal storage and a dual 4380mAh battery on the LTE model and 4235mAh dual-battery on the 5G version. Both have fast-charging capabilities and are wireless PowerShare compatible.
