The Lenovo Yoga Tablet 2 10 is a welcome follow up to the original with a vastly improved screen and better performance

The Lenovo tablet didn’t feel quite as slick and smooth as the Nexus 9 or Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 in our subjective web browsing tests, however. There was some noticeable stuttering when scrolling through more complex pages, but browsing performance was generally fine.

The Yoga Tablet 2’s gaming performance was also very respectable. In Ice Storm Extreme it managed a score of 9,104 and in Ice Storm Unlimited we saw 15,450. The Yoga Tablet 2 is a more than capable gaming tablet. Like other Intel-based Android tablets, you might encounter a few app compatibility problems, but these are becoming less prevalent over time as more tablets with Intel chips become available and manufacturers update their apps.

The Yoga Tablet 2 runs Android 4.4, but this has been modified by Lenovo to make it a more simple experience. Most notable is the removal of the app tray. Instead, all apps are placed on the home screen, emulating an experience more like that on iOS. If you install a lot of apps this could mean a fair bit of horizontal swiping between home screens; we missed being able to pick our favourite apps and add them to the home screens.

In another feature borrowed from iOS, instead of accessing quick setting toggles from the notification bar at the top with a two-finger swipe, you instead swipe up from the bottom of the screen. This might take some getting used to if you’re coming straight from another Android tablet.

There’s a 1.6-megapixel camera on the front for video chat and an 8-megapixel camera on the rear of the tablet. We were pleasantly surprised by the rear camera when shooting outdoors. Pictures were reasonably detailed and well exposed, if slightly on the soft side.

The Lenovo Yoga Tablet 2 10 is a big improvement on the first Yoga Tablet, thanks to its high-resolution screen and improved processor. At 13h 20m in our continuous video playback test, battery life was also very good. The kickstand adds weight but is very useful in the home. It’s a shame the screen’s colour accuracy is below average, but this is still a competent and versatile tablet.
