- The Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 5x is £400 at Amazon, down from a 180-day average of £730
- This is better value than its sibling the Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3x, which Expert Reviews called “the king of budget laptops” when we reviewed it
The Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 5x is a laptop that ticks pretty much every box you could imagine. It’s a 14in laptop with an OLED panel. It’s reasonably slim and lightweight at around 1.5kg and it comes with 16GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD – at an average price of around £730, it’s reasonable value.
However, at the reduced Amazon Deal Days price of £400 this is an insanely good specification for the money – in fact, this is the best laptop deal I’ve seen so far this Amazon Spring Sale.
We haven’t reviewed this particular model, but we liked the (normally) cheaper version – the Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3x – so much that we called it “the king of budget laptops”. At this price, the 5x represents by far the better deal.
So what makes this deal so good? Well, it’s pretty rare to see an OLED display on any laptop around £500 for a start. This type of screen ensures that any video material you watch on the laptop is going to look vibrant and punchy – particularly HDR material. It’s like having a mini OLED TV you can take wherever you go.
Is the Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 5x good for work?
It’s also not often we see a Snapdragon X series-powered laptop down at this sort of price, either. Yes, this is the slowest of that particular series of processors and graphics performance isn’t wonderful. You won’t be playing modern, triple-A games on this machine. However, my experience with other Snapdragon X-powered machines such as the Asus Zenbook A14 and the Microsoft Surface Laptop 7, is that this doesn’t matter too much if you’re going to be using the laptop mainly for productivity-style tasks.
For browsing the web, emailing and writing documents, the Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 5x is a laptop that delivers all the power and responsiveness you need. And coupled with 16GB of RAM, it should continue to feel responsive, no matter how many tabs you have open simultaneously.
Does the Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 5x have good battery life?
Finally, the efficiency of the Snapdragon chipset should mean that battery life is more than decent. Indeed, Lenovo is quoting up to 19 hours, and I’ve seen other laptops based on this chip last even longer in our battery testing, so this doesn’t seem too outlandish. Expect this laptop to last a full day of general use, and then some.
With new laptops set to get significantly more expensive in the coming months thanks to the rising cost of RAM and storage, this could be your last chance to bag a bargain this good.
