Xperia Z Ultra owners in Hong Kong report that they are receiving an official over-the-air update to Android 4.4 KitKat, complete with Sony's usual customisations

Sony has begun rolling out the latest Android 4.4 KitKat firmware update to its Xperia Z Ultra smartphone, starting with owners in Hong Kong.

A larger-screen alternative to the Xperia Z and Xperia Z1, the Xperia Z Ultra has many of the same stand-out features of its more compact brother - including sealed design which lets the handset survive submersion in up to a metre of clean water for up to half an hour without ill-effect. Despite some initial concerns with screen issues, the handset has proven popular. However, it remains on an older version of Google's Android software, overlaid with Sony's custom user interface.

Sony has yet to formally confirm an official launch date for the new firmware, but users on the XDA Developers forum have reported that Hong Kong-based owners have begun to receive a firmware update which brings the Xperia Z Ultra to Android 4.4.2 KitKat, the latest version available from Google. Retaining the custom user interface and Sony-specific software of earlier versions with minor improvements, the new firmware will boost performance, provide faster multitasking, a true full-screen mode in supported apps and integrated support for various cloud storage providers.

The Hong Kong roll-out will likely prove the vanguard of an international release, with Sony currently remaining silent on when Xperia Z Ultra customers in other countries can expect to see a similar update.
