AOC’s menu system looks crude and isn’t very easy to navigate. The controls themselves are pretty crude too: you only get Brightness, Contrast and Gamma controls, plus a dynamic contrast toggle and basic colour temperature. There are six “Eco” presets which simply raise the Brightness level from 20% up to 100% in increments, and choosing one disables both Contrast and Brightness settings, as does choosing the sRGB colour temperature.

We found the sRGB colour temperature most natural, but setting it to Warm for films might help. The dynamic contrast feature didn’t interfere with films by changing the screen’s luminosity drastically – in fact, we didn’t notice much difference at all, so we kept it switched off. The Gamma control seemed to change the contrast more than anything, and we preferred it on the 3rd setting, which made blacks a bit darker.

AOC wasn’t able to explain the HDMI input problem, but have promised to send an engineer to have a look at it. However, with a DVI port available as well, you have the option of getting one digital input working, and the impressive contrast and viewing angles, plus great colours, make this a great monitor. Even with slower response times, we still found it enjoyable to use for games thanks to its great image quality. Throw in a three year on-site warranty, and you have a Best Buy award winner.
