Ding dong deals

Last year, Amazon bought Ring – the company behind Ring Doorbells. For anyone who follows how Amazon works with its own products (aggressively price cut until they’re in every home – see Kindle and Echo), this spelled good news. It was only a matter of time before Amazon made the devices super affordable, and that’s exactly what’s happened.

Ring doorbells – for those that don’t know – provide a video connection to your front door, allowing you to check who’s outside from your phone, tablet or PC. It’ll let you speak to whoever’s outside as well, either to let them know you’ll be right there, or to pretend you’re inside if they look dicey. It’s basically the best video doorbell you can buy, as our review attests.

The standard Ring Video Doorbell 2 usually costs £179.99. Today, Amazon has cut the price to £129 – and thrown in a free Echo Dot (RRP £50), too.  You can also get the Pro version for a tenner more. What makes a doorbell professional? Well, it allows for customisation on the kind of motion it detects and works on the 5GHz WiFi spectrum. It also requires hard wiring in, while the regular Ring Doorbell 2 can run off batteries if you prefer. The Pro model usually goes for £229, but today is down to £139. No free Echo Dot here, mind.

If you have an Amazon Echo Show or Spot, the video can come straight up onscreen when anyone rings the doorbell too, which is a nice touch.

You might think that putting an expensive bit of kit on the outside of your house where it can be easily stolen would be a mistake, but Amazon is quite confident you’ll be fine. In fact, the company says it will replace stolen doorbells for free, which is quite a gesture. Although it does raise the question of how you’ll know when the package has arrived…
