Some TV reviewers are cinephiles (looking at you, Kob Monney). Others are Netflix addicts (hi Lewis Empson!). Personally, I’m a video game fiend. So, when I’m poring through the exhaustive list of Prime Day TV deals, I always keep a special eye out for models that excel when hooked up to my PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S and Nintendo Switch 2.
LG’s C series OLED has always been a strong performer in this regard, and last year’s C5 OLED didn’t let the side down. John Archer tested the 48in model for us and awarded it our Recommended badge. The TV went on to claim a Highly Commended badge in our Product of the Year Awards, narrowly missing out on the Gaming TV of the Year crown to the sensational Samsung S95F.
Lowest ever prices in this LG C5 OLED Prime Day deal
As part of its annual Prime Day sale, which runs until 11.59pm on Friday, 26 June, Amazon is offering discounts on the 42in and 65in screen sizes. I imagine you’re gagging to hear how much you can save, so let’s get that out of the way first.
- 42in LG C5 OLED: £623 versus 180-day average price of £809
- 65in LG C5 OLED: £1,299 versus 180-day average price of £1,569
The 42in model was actually slightly cheaper on day two of Prime Day (£611 according to the price-tracking tool Keepa), but the larger option is the cheapest it’s ever been on the platform. Whichever size appeals to you, these Prime Day TV deals represent great value for one of the best gaming TVs we’ve tested, though you will need to be a Prime member to access them. If you’re not already a subscriber, it’s worth signing up for a 30-day free trial.
The low price of the 42in LG C5 makes it more accessible, and, for a lot of people, it’s the more practical option. Not everyone has the space to accommodate a 65in screen – I can just about squeeze one into my room, and that’s built around maximising my home entertainment experience.
If you don’t have room for a TV with a wingspace to match the aforementioned Mr Monney, then the 42in LG C5 is the way to go this Prime Day. The black levels, contrast and SDR and HDR colour reproduction on the 48in model, which uses the same panel, really impressed John Archer.
The Filmmaker Mode proved incredibly accurate, scoring below the target value of three in all of our key Calman Ultimate tests, and the more expressive picture presets all delivered an engrossing image.
Size matters with these Prime Day deals
However, if you can afford to upsize to the 65in model, both in terms of financial outlay and spatial limitations, I recommend doing so. Not just because bigger is typically better when it comes to TVs, but also because it uses a more advanced OLED panel.
This panel can hit highlights just short of 1,300cd/m2, which is almost twice as bright as the 42in and 48in screen sizes. This makes an appreciable difference to general viewing and a big benefit in rooms affected by ambient light. That said, if you’re looking for a TV for a really bright room, I recommend choosing one of the Mini LED TVs on offer this Prime Day rather than an OLED. The Sony Bravia 7 is a similarly priced alternative at £1,229, and John Archer gave it top marks.
Of course, absorbing picture quality is only one of the things that make the LG C5 one of our favourite gaming TVs. The others include four HDMI 2.1 ports, all of which support ALLM, VRR, 4K at 144Hz and Dolby Vision Gaming, and a Boost Mode that reduces input lag to below 10ms.
I’m not due for a TV upgrade for another couple of years, but as I only have a 55in at home, I’m finding it increasingly difficult to resist pulling the trigger on the 65in LG C5 OLED. It’s one of the best Prime Day deals I’ve come across in any product category.
Speaking of product categories, we’ve got coverage across the site documenting Prime Day offers on everything from smartphones to laptops and coffee machines. We’ve also put together a list of the top deals across home and tech, which can be found on our Prime Day deals hub.
