Microsoft has knocked £200 off the superb Surface Laptop 2

A wonderful machine for a wonderful price

Did you miss out on the Surface Laptop 2 when it was reduced before Christmas? I didn’t. No sooner had I finished writing up the £200 discount on the laptop, did I mysteriously find one in my basket and – two days later – arriving at my door. I’m typing on it right now and I can confirm that it is a lovely, lovely machine.

Anyway, Microsoft has slashed the price all over again, meaning the entry-level Surface Laptop 2 (Core i5 processor, 8GB RAM, 128GB storage) can be had for just £799.

That’s the model I went for, as I am demonstrably not made of money. If you are, then you can get bigger savings by buying a nippier machine. Upgrading to 256GB of storage space is a smart move, given there’s no microSD card slot, and will set you back £1,049 – a saving of £200.

If you want a faster chip, you can upgrade to a Core i7 processor, starting at £1,329 (down £200). Upgrading the processor and doubling the RAM with a 512GB SSD brings the price to £1,879 (again, down £200), but if you really want to max out everything you can put in a 1TB SSD for £2,329 (a saving of – you guessed it – £200.)

Performance improvements aside, upgrading from the £799 model also unlocks three other colours. My grey one is nice enough, but I would have loved burgundy or blue. I just haven’t reached the level of financial security where I can quite justify spending £200 on a difference paint job.

Regardless of which model you buy, the Surface Laptop 2 is a great machine. I’d personally recommend buying the Surface Arc mouse to go with it too – a clever little input device that goes flat for travel, and bends out into a familiar mouse shape when in use. Bending it into shape also turns it on, meaning you’re not wasting battery when it’s not required.

It retails for £79.99, but get it from Currys for £54 instead.
