B&O PLAY BeoPlay S8 expands Bang & Olufsen’s speaker family with compact 2.1 system

Bang & Olufsen BeoPlay S8

The BeoPlay S8 subwoofer and speaker set has been designed to bring signature B&O sound to smaller rooms

Bang & Olufsen has announced the BeoPlay S8, the high-end AV company’s “entry-level” stereo speaker system, wich is designed to compliment the existing Beolab 14 speaker range with a more compact design that should fit easily into almost any room.

Designed by award-winning Danish industrial designer Torsten Valeur, the BeoPlay S8 is built from single pieces of pearl-blasted aluminium for both “a sleek, uninterrupted finish” and “acoustic stability”, according to B&O. With circular satellites and a subwoofer that looks more like a vase or sculpture than a piece of electronics, it was clearly meant to be put on display rather than stuffed behind a sofa.

The satellite speakers use 2.5in full-range drivers, each powered by a dedicated 140w class D amplifier, while the 8in subwoofer uses its own 280w class D amp to cover the 20-150Hz frequency range. The compact satellites can be wall-mounted or set on table stands, depending on whether you want them out of sight or on display. Table stands and wall brackets are included in the box, along with all the cables you’ll need, so there’s no need to go out and buy extras.

The S8 can connect to existing streaming music hubs, including Apple’s AirPort Express and Sonos Connect, as well as any regular audio amplifier. It’s also compatible with the Beolab 17 wireless speaker system, and will play nicely with Bang & Olufsen’s first 4K TV, the recently launched Beovision Avant.

It’s an incredibly attractive speaker system, but as with all B&O products you have to pay a premium for style: the 2.1 system will set you back a whopping £999.

The BeoPlay S8 will be available directly from shortly. It will also be appearing in selected stores later this month if you’re keen to see them in the flesh before dropping a grand on a set.
