Huawei’s smartwatches tend to slide under the radar a bit, next to the headline-grabbing wearables from Samsung, Apple and Google. But it’s well worth considering them as an alternative, because they’re usually built beautifully, look awesome and don’t cost the earth. The Huawei Watch GT 6 Pro is a case in point: at its usual price of £330, it’s a bargain, but it’s now been reduced to £266 in the Amazon Spring Deal Days sale you’d be foolish not to consider it.
Let’s look briefly at what your money gets you, from a build-quality standpoint. This watch is chunky but glamorous; the body is made from solid titanium and the rear panel from exotic polished “nanocrystal” ceramic. The glass covering the 3,000 nit OLED display is hard, scratch-resistant sapphire crystal and the whole thing looks fantastic with its hexagonal bezel and finely machined digital crown.
At £266, there is nothing from any of its rivals that even comes close to the way this thing looks and feels on your wrist. At this price, you’re looking at an Apple Watch SE 3, the standard Samsung Galaxy Watch8, or something like the Garmin Vivoactive 6 – and they’re all made from aluminium and plastic.
What features does it have?
Design and appearance are only part of the story with a smartwatch, however, and on this count, the Huawei Watch GT Pro 6 delivers, too. It can’t quite match the range of features on offer from the Apple Watch range of wearables, and notably Huawei doesn’t have anything like Apple Pay or Google Pay in the UK, so you can’t use it to pay for goods in the shops or to tap in and out on public transport networks.
However, it will display notifications from your phone when they come in, you can receive phone calls and dial out from the wrist, and it holds its own when it comes to general workout tracking facilities and health monitoring as well (including CE-certified atrial fibrillation detection for early detection of possible heart problems).
Perhaps most important is that the Huawei Watch GT 6 Pro beats most of its main rivals when it comes to battery life. In my testing, I found it lasted around a week with the always-on display enabled and running or riding on three to four days a week for at least an hour. Even the Garmin Vivoactive can’t match this, claiming a maximum of three to four days with its always-on display enabled.
Any other reasons I should buy a Huawei Watch GT 6 Pro?
Another bonus of going with the Huawei Watch GT 6 Pro is that it supports both iOS and Android smartphones, so if you choose to switch from one platform to the other in future, you won’t have to dump your smartwatch – bonus!
Coupled with excellent GPS and heart rate monitor accuracy, we thought the Huawei GT 6 Pro was a good enough overall package to claim our overall Wearable of the Year award in this year’s Expert Reviews Product of the Year awards, so it’s definitely worth £266 of your cash.
- Can’t afford £266? The standard Huawei WatchGT 6 is almost as good and also on sale, for £179. Note, though, despite the fact that its RRP is £230, the price does regularly drop to around this price
