Netflix finally comes to Sky Q but there’s a catch

Netflix is finally coming to Sky Q and the satellite TV broadcaster has unveiled how it will be integrating the service into its own service.

Viewers will be able to consume Netflix on Sky Q in two ways: via the Netflix app, accessible from the Apps section of the Sky Q interface, or via “deep integration” with the new Sky Q package.

Netflix on Sky: How does it work?

The app is identical to the what you get on any other platform, but it’s the integration that’s the interesting part. With Netflix shows given equal billing alongside Sky’s own content, viewers will be able to continue where they left off and text search for Netflix content without having to leave the comfort of the Sky Q user interface.

You’ll even be able to filter by Sky and Netflix shows as you search, to cut down on the number of options available, and Netflix shows will be marked with the Netflix logo.

Watching Netflix shows won’t work exactly like watching shows on Sky’s catch-up service, however, which downloads content before allowing you to play it. As with Netflix apps on devices and the website, shows will be streaming only on Sky’s integration.

Netflix on Sky: How much will it cost?

There’s a catch though and that is that, in order to benefit from this integration, Sky customers need to purchase the new Ultimate on Demand Package which is £10 per month.

This includes both Sky Box Sets (normally £5 per month) and Netflix Standard (normally £7.99 per month), so you’re saving money, sort of. If you have the “Sky Q Experience” and pay £10 for the Ultimate on Demand package, you’re automatically upgraded to Netflix Premium (4K).

Those with an existing Netflix account won’t be left out – Sky will transfer your account across and you’ll pay via your monthly Sky bill – and if you don’t want to pay the extra for Ultimate on Demand and the Netflix integration, you don’t have to, although you’ll be restricted to watching Netflix through the app.

Netflix on Sky: when will I be able to get it?

Sky customers will be able to pre-register for the Ultimate on Demand package at the Sky website from the 19th of September and the service, including the standalone Netflix app, will launch to customers in November 2018.
