This sturdy 2,560x1,440 monitor excels in image tests but is more expensive than its rivals

The Viewsonic VP2772 is a top-of-the-line 27in monitor designed for those seeking a high pixel count and impressive colour accuracy. It’s one of the more expensive 2,560×1,440 models we’ve seen, so our hopes were high for this IPS screen.

The monitor didn’t disappoint. Our colour calibrator showed the panel as displaying 100 per cent of the sRGB colour gamut after calibration. It was also able to display 99.5 per cent of the wider Adobe RGB gamut, which is a terrific result for any monitor. Before calibration, the monitor initially only demonstrated 92.3 per cent sRGB coverage, so if accurate colours are an important part of your work, we would strongly recommend calibrating the screen with a proper calibrator, such as the X-rite i1Display Pro.

According to our calibration software, the screen’s black levels are fairly deep, at 0.31cd/m2. Contrast levels are also pretty high, with the 891:1 ratio we measured fairly close to Viewsonic’s claimed 1000:1 figure. It’s not a sky-high contrast figure and falls short of even some cheaper monitors, but we were still impressed with the fine dark and light details we could see when viewing high-contrast images.

We had no complaints about the VP2772 in our subjective tests, either. Colours appeared incredibly vibrant and bright in all our test images, while blacks were as dark and inky as we’d expect from an IPS screen. Solid greens, reds and blues were all brilliantly displayed, while high-contrast images kept their detail, with dark greys and blacks remaining distinct from one another.

Particularly impressive are the monitor’s viewing angles; even when sitting almost at right angles to the screen, we saw very little change in the colours displayed. The monitor’s vertical viewing angles are also wide, and the monitor’s large range of vertical adjustment makes it easy to find a viewing position which suits you.

The VP2772 has a generous array of ports. There are DVI, HDMI and Mini DisplayPort connectors, with a full-size DisplayPort output to allow multiple monitors to be daisy-chained together. The four USB3 ports are useful, too, meaning you can leave your PC on the floor and still have access to high-speed ports. Only two of these USB ports are readily accessible on the right-hand side of the monitor. The other two are alongside the other ports on the back of the monitor and are harder to reach, so are better for more permanently plugged-in devices. The Viewsonic VP2772 lacks an SD card reader, which is present on the slightly more expensive, Ultimate award-winning Dell U2713H.

The screen’s stand and base are both extremely large and sturdy, and don’t have any give or wobble. It’s a great mark of quality, although we would expect such on a screen this price.

The Viewsonic VP2772 is a great 27-inch screen. Crisp, bright images and accurate colour output as well as a good array of connections and high built quality means it would be an easy Best Buy recommendation were it not for the AOC Q2770Pqu, which offers similar performance for £190 less.
