Sony Xperia Tablet Z specs, release date and price
Posted on 25 Feb 2013 at 10:44, by Tom Morgan
Sony has used its Mobile World Congress press conference to officially launch the Xperia Tablet Z - several months since it first broke cover in Japan. We've got all the details below, including specification, as well as the latest rumours surrounding price and release dates.
SONY XPERIA TABLET Z DESIGN
Sony has carried over the minimal design used for the Xperia Z smartphone to the Tablet Z, using polymer plastics tht are certified waterproof. It's an incredibly thin 6.9mm throughout, with no additional bulk like the Xperia Tablet S, and weighs 495g - roughly 150g less than the Apple iPad.
SONY XPERIA TABLET Z SCREEN
The Tablet Z's 10.1in screen has a Full HD 1,920x1,200 resolution panel, which gives a pixel density of 224ppi. This is high, but not quite up to the same levels as Apple's iPad 4 or the Nexus 10. It's powered by Sony's Mobile BRAVIA Engine 2, which is designed to reproduce the colours and contrast you would expect from a TV, let alone a tablet.
SONY XPERIA TABLET Z PERFORMANCE
Powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro quad-core processor running at 1.5GHz, paired with 2GB of RAM, the Tablet Z should have no trouble running Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean. Sony has promised an update to Android 4.2 is in the works, but has yet to set a date for its release. There will be either 32GB or 64Gb of internal storage, depending on the tablet variant.
SONY XPERIA TABLET Z CAMERA
An 8-megapixel rear camera is powered by Sony's Exmor R for mobile imaging engine and uses a backside illuminated sensor, while the front-facing webcam has a 2-megapixel resolution for 720p video chat.
SONY XPERIA TABLET Z CONNECTIVITY
As you would expect from any modern tablet, the Xperia Tablet Z has 802.11n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0, along with NFC and an IR blaster to control your TV. There will also be a 4G LTE version, for anyone that has to always be connected.
SONY XPERIA TABLET Z RELEASE DATE
Despite already being on sale in Japan, Sony was hesitant to nail down a release date for the rest of the world at MWC. We know it will launch globally in Q2, but haven't heard anything more specific.
SONY XPERIA TABLET Z PRICE
We might not know when you'll be able to buy one, but we do know how much you should set aside - the Wi-Fi only Tablet Z will cost £399 and the 4G model will cost £499.
