Amazon slashes prices on Kindle, Echo and Fire tablets

Getting an AI-packed smart speaker just got a lot cheaper

Update: With the Black Friday bargains in high demand, you might struggle to get some of these excellent deals delivered to your home in time for Christmas. Amazon is warning customers on some of its products pages, principally the Echo Dot and Fire TV Stick 4 that the devices won’t be in stock before Christmas, so that’s something worth bearing in mind. Of course, these deals are also available via other retailers, so if you’re in desperate need of a last-minute Christmas gift, you perhaps ought to check with them.

Although Amazon often offers discounts on its home-grown products, we’re pretty excited about the latest discounts. That’s chiefly because this Black Friday is the first time that the latest Echo Dot has been anything other than full price.

I had the pleasure of reviewing the Echo Dot for Expert Reviews and can confirm that it’s an improvement in every way – which is pretty impressive, given there weren’t many ways the previous generation could be improved upon. Nonetheless, it looks better, it sounds a lot better and it keeps the same keen £50 price tag.

Not for Black Friday though. Amazon has cut the third-generation Echo Dot’s price by half, making it available for just £24.99. Previous Echo Dots have been this price before, of course, but never the third-gen model.

Arguably even better value is if you buy a new Echo Dot with a 4K Fire TV Stick: the pair comes to £59.98, rather than the normal £99.98. Alternatively, you can buy the new Echo Dot with the Philips Hue starter pack for £94.99, down from £109.99. This set of bulbs can be turned on, dimmed and adjusted by your phone or via the Alexa smart assistant. So it’s just as well you’ll have a new smart speaker to take advantage.

Elsewhere, the sale is good, but more familiar. You can get the second-generation Amazon Echo for £54.99 (down from £89.99) or the Amazon Echo and smart plug bundle for £64.98 (down from £114.98). The Echo Plus, which I also loved when I reviewed it, is down to £109.99 with a Philips Hue bulb.

If you prefer your Echo with a screen, the Echo Spot is down to £89.99, while the new Echo Show comes with a free Philips Hue bulb and is now £169.99, down from £219.99.

If Echoes aren’t your thing, then the brand-new Kindle Paperwhite is down £30, setting you back £89.99. This is another one I reviewed, and just like the Echo Dot, it’s another case where Amazon has somehow managed to improve something that was already pretty close to perfection.

And if you like Amazon’s cheap and cheerful Fire tablets, then they’re now even cheaper, while maintaining the same level of cheer. The 8in Fire HD 8 is £49.99 (down from £79.99), the 10.1in version is £99.99 (down from £149.99) and the 8in Kids model is £89.99 rather than its usual £129.99.

And finally, a bit of a curveball: if you fancy adding an Alexa-enabled doorbell into your smart home set-up, Amazon has cut the cost of the Ring Video Doorbell Pro, bringing it down from £229 to just £149 – that’s a 35% discount that saves you £80!
