Logitech Harmony remotes updated with Sonos speaker support

Logitech Harmony Sonos

Thanks to a firmware update, Logitech now lets you use your multi-function remote to control your multi-room speakers

Selected models in Logitech’s Harmony universal remote control range now play nicely with Sonos wireless speakers, following a firmware update released to owners last night.

Revealed yesterday on the official Logitech blog, the pair of updates for the Harmony Ultimate and Harmony Smart Control Hub let Sonos owners control music playback and speaker volume directly from their Harmony remote, as well as access Sonos favourites using either the Harmony Ultimate’s touchscreen or the Harmony app for iOS and Android.

The updates have also introduced a new speech-to-text feature, letting Harmony owners search all of their content on a PC, Mac, Roku media player, AppleTV or Amazon FireTV set-top box. Previously speech-to-text was limited to Amazon’s recently announced FireTV, but Logitech has adapted the technology and incorporated it into its smartphone app – giving customers the choice between a virtual keyboard or voice recognition when searching for a particular film, TV show or music track.

Finally, the update has streamlined the Harmony setup process to automatically detect the devices connected to your home network, including any Sonos speakers, Roku media players or Philips Hue lightbulbs, which can all be controlled using a Harmony device.

Harmony Ultimate owners should be prompted to connect their remote to the MyHarmony service to download and install the update. Unfortunately it appears that anyone with an older Harmony remote is out of luck, as Logitech hasn’t announced support for any of its legacy models.
