Samsung Chromebook 2 announced with faux leather lid, Full HD display

Samsung has introduced two new Chromebook models to its laptop line-up, adding the same faux leather stitching as its Galaxy smartphones

Samsung has introduced the second generation of its Chromebook laptop, expanding the range with two new models which will both include the same faux leather stitching on the lid as the company’s Galaxy Note 3 smartphone.

Samsung Chromebook 2

After finding moderate success with the Chromebook Series 3, Samsung has decided to focus more on the high-end (at least in terms of Chromebooks) with the Chromebook 2. The larger 13.3in model has a Full HD 1,920×1,080 resolution display, which gives it a significant advantage over the smaller model in terms of picture clarity – the cheaper 11.6in Chromebook 2 makes do with a 1,366×768 resolution screen.

The 13in model will be powered by Samsung’s own Exynos 5 Octa processor, running at 2.1GHz. It might not be the most powerful chip for a laptop, but Google’s web-based ChromeOS doesn’t exactly demand raw performance in order to run smoothly. The 11in model gets the same processor, but it operates at a slower 1.9GHz clock speed. The mobile CPU should also help with battery life, with Samsung predicting over eight and a half hours from a single charge. Both models will have 4GB of RAM.

A 16GB internal SSD isn’t exactly spacious, but seeing as ChromeOS doesn’t have a huge selection of programs to install directly onto the laptop this shouldn’t be a major issue. There’s also a microSD card reader for adding space for multimedia files.

Both models will include over $100 of premium software and services, with Samsung promising a year’s Premium subscription to smartphone syncing tool AirDroid, Wunderlist Pro for note-taking and LittleBridge for learning English.

Samsung has confirmed that both new Chromebook models will be launching in North America first, for $320 (roughly £190) and $399 (around £239) for the 11in and 13in models respectively. The 11in model will be launching in “classic” black and white colours, while the 13in version will be arriving in “titan grey”.

Both are due to arrive in April, which hopefully gives the company plenty of time to decide whether to bring it to the UK as well.
