Toshiba Encore review
Gives you Windows 8.1 in an 8in tablet, but Windows is fiddly to use with a touchscreen and the Encore lacks a full-sized USB port

Our main issue with the Encore is usability. Windows 8.1 is admittedly an improvement over previous versions of Microsoft’s operating system, but it still it isn’t best suited to touchscreens. The Start screen and full-screen apps are easy enough to use, but as soon as you switch to the traditional Windows desktop you’re met with small icons and tiny text. Connecting a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard is the best way to get any serious work done because the onscreen keyboard isn’t particularly suited to typing anything longer than an email.
As the Encore runs the full version of Windows 8.1, you can install whatever apps you’d like to use. Unlike Windows RT tablets, you aren’t restricted to apps downloaded from the Windows Store. However, the majority of Windows programs will have been designed for a mouse and keyboard, and their use could prove tricky to use with a touchscreen.
Toshiba Encore conclusion
The Encore is a compact means of enjoying Windows 8.1, and it’s also relatively cheap, but unlike some Windows tablets that are 10in or larger, we can’t see the Encore replacing your laptop. As it has no full-size USB ports you’ll struggle to connect your existing peripherals, and if you just want a tablet for web browsing you may be better off with an Android tablet such as the LG G Pad 8.3 instead.
