Despite Mini LED technology muscling in on its territory, OLED remains the premium panel technology of choice for many manufacturers. With competition increasing, the previously prohibitively high price of the self-emissive tech has come down to a point where it’s no longer unattainable for your average punter.
This Cyber Monday TV deal on the Philips OLED760 is a case in point. The 55in Philips entry-level OLED option is available for £849 at Amazon and Currys, and can be snapped up for £799 at Richer Sounds if you use the code RSTV100 at checkout.
That’s not the lowest it’s ever been – price-tracking tool Keepa states it was available for £739 for a couple of days in October – but is significantly below its 180-day average of £1,032. It’s also about as cheap as you’re going to get for a 55in OLED TV – I’ve only been able to find one other OLED costing less this Cyber Monday: the LG B5, which can be yours for £719 at Amazon.
That’s the obvious choice if you’re looking to pay as little as possible for an OLED TV before the clock strikes midnight tonight, bringing Black Friday to a merciful end. But I’ve not had the chance to take a look at that set myself. I have, however, currently got the 55in Philips OLED760 in for testing, and have been really impressed by how it’s performed so far.
Granted, it’s not as bright as the Primary RGB Tandem OLED options we’ve seen this year, like Philips OLED910+, the LG G5 and the Panasonic Z95B. But, it’s able to push out peaks at over 900cd/m2 for HDR content – and the Filmmaker Mode is impressively accurate, recording Delta E greyscale and P3 saturation sweep errors of less than the visible threshold of three during my testing.
Crystal Clear pictures
Images in the Crystal Clear mode are dazzling, though not as accurate, with the OLED760 managing to cover a very respectable 74% of the BT.2020 wide colour gamut with plenty of flair. I’ve been thoroughly enjoying watching all sorts of material on it, ranging from live broadcasts on Freely, which is supported via the Titan OS operating system, to blockbuster films on Amazon Prime and Netflix, and putting it through its paces on the gaming front, too.
And both the OLED760’s gaming credentials (four HDMI ports supporting 4K at 120Hz, VRR and ALLM) and performance are top-notch. I measured input lag at below 10ms in the dedicated Game mode, while the vividly rendered wacky and colourful landscapes of The Outer Worlds 2 have been oozing personality.
Based on my time with it so far, I’m very happy to recommend the Philips OLED760 as a great entry point into the world of OLEDs. It performs admirably, looks the part, and is very well priced. It’s also the cheapest OLED with Ambilight. If you’re not familiar with Philips’ immersive, ambient lighting, then you’re really missing out. LEDs built into the back of the OLED760 illuminate the area behind the TV to create the impression of the screen being larger than it is, and can also help reduce eye strain.
Ambilight delight
I’ve written it several times before, but I’m an unashamed fan of the technology and feel that it helps set Philips TVs apart in a crowded market, and that’s definitely the case with the OLED760. Can you buy a cheaper OLED this Cyber Monday? Yes. But does it emit an alluring glow that adds to your viewing immersion? Didn’t think so.
