How to watch the Premier League for free on Amazon Prime

Amazon Prime will now broadcast all 10 Premier League fixtures that take place on 26 and 27 December in the UK

Earlier this year, Amazon Prime Video obtained the exclusive rights to broadcast 20 Premier League games in the ongoing 2019/2020 season. The service broadcasted all 10 Premier League games that took place in the first week of December. The remaining 10 Premier League fixtures will be broadcast on December 26 and 27.

As Amazon points out, the first week of December was the first time that every match on a day has been given equal billing and broadcast simultaneously in the UK. You can watch live streams of multiple Premier League games at the same time on different devices – similar to how the service broadcasted coverage of the US Open. Games can be streamed live via Amazon Prime using any smart device, including phones, tablets, games consoles, the Fire TV Stick, select Smart TVs and more.

The main fixtures on Boxing Day are Manchester United vs Newcastle United at 5:30pm. This game is important because The Red Devils are slowing finding their groove in the Premier League and Newcastle defeated them in their last Premier League encounter earlier in October. Another crucial fixture is between the top two Premier League teams when Liverpool face Leicester City at 8pm.

Amazon’s owner Jeff Bezos has previously said that the reason it invests so heavily in hardware (with its Amazon Echo range for instance) and on original Prime Video content is to push Amazon Prime subscriptions. This, in turn, encourages more people to buy products from his vast store and help recoup these investments. It’s no surprise, then, that the fixtures Amazon has bought the rights to fall within a key shopping period – the run-up to Christmas and the Boxing Day sales.

How to get Amazon Prime Video

Amazon Prime has three basic plans that all let you watch the Premier League games that are being broadcast next week and in the last week of 2019. Amazon Prime Video costs £5.99/month and only lets you watch Prime Video content, including hit series like Jack Ryan, Carnival Row and other sporting events like the recently-concluded Nitto ATP Tour tennis championships. The notable exception with this option is that you won’t get the other benefits of Amazon Prime.

There are two ways to subscribe to Amazon Prime. You can either subscribe for a month or a year. A monthly subscription costs £7.99 and a yearly subscription costs £79. The only difference between the two plans is that the monthly subscription gives you the flexibility to cancel at any time. Is it worth it? Well, the myriad of Prime benefits that you get are endless. This includes free one-day delivery on millions of items, access to thousands of Prime Video shows and films at the tap of a button, Prime Music, free Kindle books with Prime Reading, Prime Wardrobe, Amazon Pantry, and more.

How to watch the Premier League on Amazon Prime for free

All three Amazon Prime plans come with a 30-day trial, which means that – in theory – you can watch all of Amazon’s December Premier League fixtures for free. The 30-day free trial is also a good way to test the service and see whether it’s something you’d like to commit to long-term. Most Amazon Prime subscribers start off using the trial for their various means only to end up falling in love with the service and realising how beneficial Amazon Prime is. If you don’t have an Amazon Prime account yet, it’s especially useful to get one during the busy Christmas period because you’re only a day away from getting any gifts or Secret Santa presents you may have accidentally forgotten to buy.

How to watch the Premier League on Amazon Prime abroad

Amazon Prime only announced these Premier League fixtures in June. If you’re someone who plans ahead, then you may have already made travel plans before knowing which fixtures were going to be broadcast on Amazon Prime. The only way to access Amazon Prime UK from outside the country is to use a good VPN service. A VPN (or ‘virtual private network’) will fool your device into thinking that it’s based anywhere in the world that you choose. It also encrypts all online activity on your device thereby making you completely anonymous to hackers, and even to your ISP. There are tons of VPN services but most won’t let you watch Amazon Prime UK from outside the country because Amazon – like other streaming services – geoblocks its contents to ensure that it isn’t misused.
