LG 49UJ630V 49in 4K Ultra HD HDR TV (2017) – Product overview

Currys cuts the price of its LG 49UJ630V 4K TV to £449 but is it really a good deal?

We haven’t tested the LG 49UJ630V but with Currys discounting it by a hefty £130 from £579 to £470 for Black Friday, you probably want to know if it’s worth buying or not.

The first thing to note is that this is a 2017 model LG TV whose original price was £730. LG TVs rarely sell at their launch prices for very long, though, so it’s best to view the discount as being from £599, which according to Amazon price tracking website CamelCamelCamel, has been the price since early June.

It’s a 49in 4K TV – the perfect size for most UK living rooms in our view – and supports both HDR10 and HLG, so it’s as future proof as a telly can be these days. I can’t speak to the quality of the image itself but it’s worth noting that this TV uses “Direct” LED backlighting. This is where the backlight is in the form of an array of LEDs behind the panel, but there is no system to dim the LEDs individually; this TV does not offer local dimming.

Connectivity is decent without being stellar. You get three HDMI inputs, optical audio output, two USB ports, Ethernet, 1 set of composite video ports, plus the TV supports Miracast so you can mirror the screen of your Android phone. There’s also both Freeview and Freesat built in.

One of the key selling points of this LG TV has to be its webOS operating system, though, which for some time now has been the best TV operating system around. The LG 49UJ630V runs webOS 3.0, which is the latest version, and the main reason it’s so good is its speed. It’s very, very fast indeed.

The content offering is pretty good as well, covering all the main UK TV offerings and the key sources of 4K TV and movies. That means you get Amazon, Freeview Play, Netflix, YouTube, BBC iPlayer, All 4, ITV Player, and Sky Now TV.

All-in-all it’s a pretty good deal on a 2017 4K TV. Bear in mind, though, that the price reduction isn’t huge since the price is usually £599, not £730.
