The Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra stretches the limits between tablet and laptop, coming bundled with an optional keyboard cover and S Pen stylus, giving you a range of ways to use it, depending on your needs. The Tab S8 Ultra usually retails around its original price of £999 but right now, you can save a massive £200 and pick one up for just £799 in the Black Friday sales.
Besides the impressive price, what exactly is so special about this tablet? The most prominent feature is the absolutely gorgeous (and enormous) 14.6in display. In our Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra review, we called it the sharpest, most vivid AMOLED panel that we’d ever come across on any device. The 2,960 x 1,848 resolution, 120Hz refresh rate and HDR10 support keep everything looking smooth, whether you’re browsing the internet or binging a show, while the covering of Gorilla Glass 5 adds an extra layer of scratch resistance.
Dive beneath that beautiful display and things remain equally impressive. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor is keeping the lights on here, coupled with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of onboard storage. The performance delivered by these components isn’t a massive leap forward on the previous generation of Samsung devices, but it’s enough of a bump to keep everything feeling breezy and responsive during general use.
Despite all of this impressive hardware, the Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra manages to maintain a relatively low profile, measuring a petite 5.5mm in thickness and weighing only 726g. These travel-friendly dimensions make the S8 Ultra a great choice for hybrid workers and students, as it’s less weight to lug around than a laptop. If you want it to fully replace your laptop, there is a keyboard case that you can purchase separately, but it’s quite pricey and bulky. As with most things, it’s not all good news here, and there are a couple of minor issues that are worth bearing in mind before purchasing. First of all, as much as Samsung does its best to compensate, the software is designed for mobile devices first, so you’ll be stuck with the phone versions of apps like Slack and Twitter when working in desktop mode.
Easier to get used is the bundled S Pen stylus, which can be found neatly tucked away on a magnetic mount on the back of the tablet. We found the S Pen to be a little on the skinny side, so it will take some getting used to if you’re a stylus aficionado, but in use, we found the friction in the nib gave an easy, natural feel to writing and sketching that we ultimately preferred to the Apple Pencil 2.
