Disney Plus just got a lot more interesting, thanks to Star

A whole lot more content for adults is coming to Disney Plus from 23 February

If you’ve worked your way through the entirety of Disney Plus’ content in the 310 days since the service launched in the UK, you’ll be pleased to hear that a lot more programming is arriving next month courtesy of Disney Plus Star. It’s a mixture of original content and much-loved classics, and while the original Disney Plus launch lineup was arguably more family friendly, the new arrivals are definitely of a more mature nature.

On 23 February, Disney Plus will add 270 films and 75 shows. Of those, 20 are award winning, including the likes of Modern Family, The X-Files, Firefly, Lost, Bones, American Dad, Family Guy and Prison Break. There’s also room for Academy Award winning films like Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, The Grand Budapest Hotel and The Favourite.
But it’s not just about Disney pushing a load of older stuff onto its service. There are also new, exclusive Star originals. Solar Opposites is a new animated sitcom from the creators of Rick and Morty, and will join the horror series Helstrom which follows the exploits of Marvel’s Daimon and Satana Helstrom. These will be available at launch, and followed later in the year by Dopesick with Michael Keaton and Rosario Dawson, and The Dropout with Kate McKinnon.

With more content inappropriate for younger eyes and ears, you might be pleased to hear that Disney is upping its parental controls game, too. Also launching on 23 February is the ability to set limits on what content can be accessed by accounts based on age ratings, with the option to add PINs on accounts with unfettered access.

There’s good and bad news when it comes to pricing. While Disney Plus Star will be included in the overall price of Disney Plus, that price is going to go up when it launches, from £5.99 per month/£59.99 a year to £7.99 per month/£79.90 annually. The good news is that the price rise is just under a month away from kicking in, and any customers on the old tariff will continue to pay the lower price for six months, meaning anybody who signs up today won’t feel the price rise until August 2021.
