LucasArts classic Grim Fandango coming to PS4, PS Vita

Grim Fandango

Disney bringing LucasArts classic to consoles for the first time, with Sony scoring a timed exclusive for PS4, PS Vita

Grim Fandango, the classic LucasArts point and click adventure inspired by film noir and Mexico’s Day of the Dead, will finally be coming to consoles this year – 15 years after it first launched on the PC.

Sony has struck a deal with Disney, the company that purchased LucasArts in 2012 for $4.05 billion before closing the studio a year later, to bring Grim Fandango to the PS4 and PlayStation Vita as a timed exclusive later this year.

Originally launched in 1998, Grim Fandango is a dark comedy adventure game that tasks travel agent Manuel “Manny” Clavera with saving a virtuous soul from damnation. It was the first LucasArts adventure game to use 3D graphics overlaid on pre-rendered backgrounds, which should make it ideal for a high definition remaster on current generation consoles and handhelds.

Game designer Tim Schafer confirmed on Twitter that Grim Fandango would eventually come to other platforms, but because Sony was instrumental in making the updated version happen he isn’t yet ready to talk about a possible Xbox One release.

Shafer’s company DoubeFine will be overseeing the port, with a release expected for later in the year.
