The PS4 Gold headset is a steal as Black Friday rolls into Cyber Monday

Sony’s own ‘Gold’ headphones are a 7.1 virtual surround sound delight

A few months ago, my trusty ten-year-old Turtle Beach headset finally gave up the ghost. Well, technically they still worked, but the masking tape I used to hold the left cup in place was unreliable enough that playing PS4 online involved wedging the headset between my neck and head which, as you can probably imagine, wasn’t hugely practical.

I eventually upgraded to the Sony Gold wireless headset for PlayStation 4, though I ummed and ahhed given the price. If my Turtle Beach headset had lasted just a little longer, entering my credit card details would have proved much less painless, as they can now be had for just £49.99 at a number of retailers including Argos, John Lewis, Currys and ShopTo.

For what it’s worth, I rate these headphones pretty highly. They include a virtual 7.1 surround sound which really does throw you into the game atmospherically, as well as giving you a bit of a tactical advantage on supported games. A friend of mine swears by them for when it comes to telling exactly where an enemy is in Rainbow Six: Siege, for example.

Being an official Sony product offers certain perks over other headsets, as well. Chief amongst these is the PS4 app where you can change settings for certain genre of games, which can be flicked between using a button on the side of the headphones. Unlike other sets of headphones, you also don’t have to plug them into your DualShock pad – they are truly wireless, letting you wander off to make a drink without losing track of the in-game conversation.

If you want a bit more by way of sound quality, the Sony Platinum headphones – reviewed here – are also on sale, going for £99.95 instead of the usual £130, but for me, the Sony Gold headphones are the sweet spot between price and quality.
