The Moto G7 Play is now under £100

Not our favourite Moto, but good value for under £100

Last year, Motorola released four Moto G7s at the same time. The cheapest of these at just £149 was the Moto G7 Play, and while we prefer its slightly pricier siblings, the phone still punched above its weight and was a decent buy if you simply couldn’t stretch any further.

Now, as Motorola is slowly releasing new members of the G8 family, the G7 Play is going even cheaper. In fact, you can buy the handset for just £99.95 from Argos.

Specs-wise, the Moto G7 Play is similar to the G7 and G7 Power. All three use the pretty capable Qualcomm Snapdragon 632, although the G7 Play has just 2GB RAM which can impact performance somewhat.

Despite this, it compares pretty favourably to other sub-£100 handsets that we’ve reviewed recently as the graph below shows:

These aren’t bad phones, either. Well, the Alcatel 1X kind of was, but both the Xiaomi Redmi 7A and Moto E6 Plus got glowing five-star reviews from us. I know, because I wrote them.

And yes, while you’d be better off paying a bit more for the regular Moto G7 or G7 Power for the extra RAM, the Moto G7 Play isn’t bad on its own terms. It’s good looking, well made and comes with a nice clean install of Android to boot. As Nathan wrote in his review: “the Moto G7 Play is a solid choice.

“Its specifications aren’t nearly as intriguing as the rest of the lineup, and there are some similarly priced phones that are doing things slightly better in some areas, but the Moto G7 Play still offers up an attractive proposition for the budget buyer.”

That was true at £149. With £50 off, it’s a significantly more tempting proposition for those who need to watch their expenditure.
