Apple launches the new iPod touch: Seventh-generation iPod touch starts at £199 and comes with AR and 256GB storage

The new iPod touch comes in grey, white, gold, blue, pink and will also be available via Apple's charity partner PRODUCT (RED)

In a somewhat surprising move, Apple has unveiled a new iPod touch powered by the Apple-designed A10 Fusion chip.

Starting at £199 for the 32GB model, and rising to £399 for the 256GB version, the seventh-generation iPod touch comes in grey, white, gold, blue and pink, and will also be available via Apple’s charity partner in red as part of its (PRODUCT) RED line. All sales of PRODUCT(RED) gadgets contributes to research into fighting AIDS.

This not only makes the new iPod touch the cheapest way to buy an iOS device, but it is also the first time the product line has been available with a 256GB capacity. It’s obviously also compatible with Apple Music, which gives access to 50 million songs over Wi-Fi via the cloud, meaning you don’t have to use this storage.

Little has changed in terms of design since the 2017, sixth-generation model, and if you’ve used iOS 12 before you’ll be instantly familiar with the new iPod touch. The A10 Fusion chip makes it faster both for gaming and general use, however, and also makes it possible to make Group FaceTime calls for the first time. What’s more, this is the first iPod touch to work with augmented reality (AR) experiences and games.

The faster graphics will come into their own in the autumn when Apple launches Apple Arcade, a game subscription service with more 100 games, no ads or additional purchases and the ability to download games for offline play.

“We’re making the most affordable iOS device even better with performance that is twice as fast as before, Group FaceTime and augmented reality,” said Greg Joswiak, Apple’s vice president of Product Marketing. “The ultra-thin and lightweight design of iPod touch has always made it ideal for enjoying games, music and so much more wherever you go.”
