OnePlus reveals the OnePlus Watch

The phone maker’s first wearable costs only £149

OnePlus has announced its first foray into the world of wearable devices, launching the OnePlus Watch alongside its OnePlus 9 Series of smartphones.

With prices starting at only £149, OnePlus has pitched its Watch on the more affordable end of the spectrum – substantially cheaper than the Apple Watch Series 6, at £379, and even less than the Apple Watch Series 3, at £199. The cost is more in line with cheaper fitness wearables such as the Honor MagicWatch 2.

The round watchface measures 46mm across, there’s built-in GPS and heart rate monitoring, plus 5ATM water proofing and an IP68 water and dust resistance rating.

OnePlus says it will automatically detect when you are jogging or running and will provide a bunch of metrics, from pulse and distance through to calories burnt and speed monitoring, as well as swimming efficiency.

In addition to workout stats, OnePlus says the new Watch will also offer blood oxygen saturation monitoring, stress detection, breathing training, rapid heart rate alerts and sedentary reminders.

In a press release, OnePlus says it wants its Watch to “integrate into the daily digital life of OnePlus users”, suggesting a growing ambition to create its own network of products and services. As an example, the OnePlus Watch can act as a smart remote for the OnePlus TV, and all the metrics gained from wearing it can be managed via the OnePlus Health app.

If OnePlus is indeed trying to “do an Apple”, it may go some way to explain why the OnePlus Watch is not using Android Wear software, although OnePlus has yet to say what OS its new wearable will be using.

The OnePlus Watch comes with 4GB of standalone storage, although only 2GB of that will be available to use. It will also have a 402mAh battery, which OnePlus says should last up to two weeks of “sustainable use”, although we’ll need to see for ourselves when we get it in for testing.

There’s no information on release date yet, although the OnePlus 9 is available for pre-order on the 23rd of March. OnePlus says availability of its OnePlus Watch across Europe will be shared in the following weeks.
