Fantastic space battles but tedious ground combat. It's a good game and one that will thrill any trekkie.

Klingon players earn rank mostly through PvP gameplay (although there is some optional PvE content), which takes longer but can be great fun and a refreshing change from computer-controlled opposition. Klingons also don’t suffer from some of the restrictions imposed on Federation ships, allowing for a greater degree of experimentation.

It’s not a huge game at present, in fact it’s relatively quick to get up to the highest Federation rank – around a month’s worth of play, maybe only 2 weeks for seriously dedicated players. However, most players will want to create at least one new character to try a different class, and reaching the same level in PvP will take far more time and effort.

The developer, Cryptic, has already brought out additional content for high-level characters, and promises more to come. A lack of end-game content is the downfall of many a promising MMO – look no further than previous Shopper favourites such as Warhammer Online and Aion – and it’s too early to tell if that will be STO’s fate. It’s not the deepest or most polished MMO release of recent years, either, but it’s still an immensely enjoyable game and Star Trek fans certainly shouldn’t miss it.
