Amazon’s Blink security cameras are a favourite here at Expert Reviews because they’re cheap, they deliver impressive battery life and, in general, they work pretty well. And now Amazon is adding a new member to the family: the Blink Outdoor 2K+.
The latest addition looks much like the pre-existing Blink Outdoor 4 camera. It’s square in shape with the lens on the front, mounted in the top left corner. And like the older model, it’s weather-resistant to IP-65 and battery powered, so you can mount it outside without having to worry about running a mains cable to it. Amazon has, however, boosted the capabilities of this camera with a number of additions and improvements.
It can capture video at 2,560 x 1,440 – a considerable step up from the 1,920 x 1,080 its predecessor was able to record at. It can also zoom into a scene at a magnification of 4x, but because it’s a digital zoom, this will result in some loss of quality.
The new camera is equipped with a spotlight, allowing it to capture colour footage in dark conditions, and it can also record in colour in low light without the spotlight, or infrared if you prefer.
The introduction of noise cancellation should also mean audio capture is much cleaner than before, and there’s now two-way audio, which is designed to make conversations more natural. And, finally, Blink has enhanced the camera’s smart detection capabilities, with the ability to recognise people and vehicles, separating them from general motion events.
If you’re tempted, the Blink Outdoor 2K+ is available from today for £90 and, like the recent Blink Video Doorbell (2nd gen), it comes packaged with a Sync Module Core, which it requires to run. Take our advice, however, and hold onto your cash. It will almost certainly be reduced significantly in price during the next Amazon sale.
