Amazon’s last-gen Kindle is going cheap right now

The new Amazon Kindle is out, so it’s a perfect time to buy the old one for less

The last-generation Amazon Kindle is on sale right now for only £50. If you were looking for a reason to buy an e-book reader and were hoping to avoid forking out, this is a bit of a bargain – the last time the Kindle 8 was this cheap was January 2017.

The reason for this fantastic price is simple: there’s a newer Amazon Kindle model out now. The current-generation Kindle features an integrated reading light, as well as Bluetooth support and the ability to listen to audiobooks. As a result, it’s a little pricier than its predecessor, starting at £70.

Usually, the last-generation Kindle costs £60, but Amazon has recently cut the price by £10, offering a cheap and viable alternative to the 2019 model in the process. With a touchscreen display that avoids sunlight glare and reads like paper, the Kindle 8 was once the slimmest and lightest model, and offers many of the same perks as its newer sibling.

Four gigabytes of storage holds thousands of ebooks, all of which are stored in the cloud by Amazon so you can download them whenever you want. There are more than 5.5 million to choose from, meaning you’re hardly going to run out of things to read; if you’re an Amazon Prime member, you can even access thousands of books for free.

There are two versions of the Kindle 8 on sale at the moment: the one with special offers, and the one without. Special offers appear as advertisements for relevant ebooks while your Kindle is in sleep mode – if you’re daunted by the idea, you can pay £10 more for the advert-free variant. To be honest, though, they’re pretty unobtrusive.

The standard Kindle is more basic than its Oasis, Paperwhite and Fire HD relatives, but the gap is closing, and for £50 you’re unlikely to find better value for money from a modern ebook reader.
