Stunning Q950TS flagship 8K QLED spearheads Samsung’s 2020 TV lineup

Samsung unveils its flagship 8K QLED TV alongside many new 8K and 4K models

South Korean consumer electronics giant Samsung Electronics has unveiled its 2020 TV lineup at the company’s annual forum held at the Mediterranean Conference Centre in Malta, which is spearheaded by the flagship Q950TS 8K QLED television.

Available in 65in, 75in and 85in models in the UK and other European markets, the Samsung Q950TS’s display has an Infinity Screen design with a remarkable 99% screen-to-body ratio. Its slender 15mm profile and six inbuilt speakers contribute to an immersive experience, allowing the display to blend into the home viewing environment and deliver an enveloping sound output.

The Korean brand has expanded its 8K QLED 2020 range further, offering the Q900T and the Q800T in sizes from 55in to 98in to cater to a wider range of buyers with different budgets and requirements. The Q900T will lack the Infinity Screen design and One Connect Box compared with the Q950TS, whereas the entry-level Q800T is more similar in specifications to last year’s flagship Q950R.

While 8K is clearly an integral component of Samsung’s TV marketing strategy, the company hasn’t neglected its 4K QLED lineup. Again, there’s a sprawling choice available to consumers, with Q60T, Q70T, Q80T, Q90T and Q95T models coming in sizes from 43in to 85in. The Q95T 4K flagship QLED is more similar to 2019’s Q85R in terms of specifications and will ship with the useful One Connect Box.

Keen to set its TVs apart from chasing competitors, Samsung has also implemented a host of enhanced ‘Smart Screen’ AI capabilities across its 2020 television range. Picture-wise, ‘Quantum Dot AI’ combines Samsung’s 8K content processor with industry-leading Smart TV platform Tizen to upscale any content to be displayed optimally on the 8K QLEDs regardless of source quality or resolution. There is also ‘Adaptive Picture’ technology which analyses ambient light conditions as well as the content on the screen to improve image quality in both bright or dark rooms.

On the sound front, ‘Active Voice Amplifier’ eliminates European consumers’ second-largest distraction when watching TV – background noise – by automatically recognising these interruptions and adjusting voice clarity accordingly. ‘Object Tracking Sound+’ (OTS+) creates a three-dimensional sound effect by combining the multiple speakers on the top, side and bottom of the TV with a proprietary AI algorithm that matches audio with the on-screen action. Lastly, ‘Q-Symphony’ is a unique multi-speaker implementation that combines the inbuilt speakers on 2020 QLEDs and a compatible Samsung Q-Series soundbar to provide a richer, fuller surround sound experience.

The Samsung Q950TS, Q900T and Q800T 8K QLED, as well as the Q95T 4K QLED, will support a comprehensive array of HDMI 2.1 features, such as 4K@120Hz, Variable Refresh Rate (VRR), Auto Low-Latency Mode (ALLM) and enhanced Audio Return Channel (eARC). The South Korean brand continues to shun Dolby Vision, however, choosing instead to go with the open-standard HDR10+ dynamic metadata format.

Price and availability remain unconfirmed at the time of writing, but we will update this article as soon as we learn more.
