The Galaxy Watch Active is a Prime Day bargain

A better smartwatch than fitness tracker, but the Galaxy Watch Active is still a Prime Day bargain

I rather liked the Samsung Galaxy Watch when I reviewed it last month. A fine-looking smartwatch with plenty of functionality, it’s now going cheap at Amazon where you can buy it for just £174

That price is for Amazon Prime members only, although the non-Prime price is only a fiver more. Still, every little helps, so probably best to sign up for a free Amazon Prime trial before you check out.

On paper, the Samsung Galaxy Watch has everything you could possibly want in a wearable. As well as looking the part, it has a wonderful OLED screen, shows notifications, and can comfortably go two days on a single charge. When it does need charging, it’ll sit on any wireless charger – and that includes the back of a Samsung Galaxy S10 if you’re lucky enough to have one. It really is an excellent smartwatch.

Oddly, it actually fares a little worse as a fitness tracker, despite having the word “Active” prominently in its title. While it has GPS and heart-rate tracking, I was a bit disappointed by a couple of things that serious runners and cyclists may be alarmed by. There’s no ANT+, for a start, and the actual activity-tracking screen can’t be customised, meaning you’re stuck with the stats that Samsung thinks are worth keeping tabs on. Samsung Health, too, isn’t the best for serious athletes.

In short, if you’re after a quality running watch, I’d suggest looking at the Prime Day deals on the Polar Vantage M or the Garmin Vivoactive 3. But if you want a great-looking smartwatch that happens to moonlight as a fitness tracker, then it’s hard to go wrong with the Samsung Galaxy Watch Active. Especially at this price.
