Xiaomi reveals plans for Mi Mix 4

Xiaomi to include Snapdragon 855 and triple-lens camera in the Mi Mix 4

We’ve only just had our first look at the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3, but rumours surrounding the Mi Mix 4 are already rife and it looks as if we’ve had our very first rumours about the Chinese company’s 2019 flagship, courtesy of Chinese new website ITHome.

And those rumours suggest that Xiaomi will be following fellow manufacturer Huawei, Samsung and Nokia in offering a triple-camera smartphone for the very first time.

The ITHome article, which gleaned its information from a report by Hong Kong-based GF Securities, suggests Xiaomi will add an extra camera lens to both the Xiaomi Mi 9 and the Mi Mix 4. The Mix 4 might also receive a “periscope lens”, a move that could mean greater optical zoom without needing to make the phone’s body thicker. With the absence of published specifications, however, we’re yet to know how this will come together.

Another promising prospect for the Mix 4 is the rumoured inclusion of the latest Qualcomm chip. Xiaomi has equipped its phones with the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon chips for a while now, and it looks like the Mix 4 will maintain this trend, including the Snapdragon 855 chip, which was launched at the beginning of December 2018.

The processor supports 5G connectivity, so there’s a chance the Mi Mix 4 will do so as well, boasts superior camera features, and promises to be more power-efficient than the previous Snapdragon flagship chip, meaning the Mix 4 is set to be an impressive step up on the Mix 3. We’ve also had rumours of a Mi Mix 3 5G, though, so it may not be the only Xiaomi phone to have this feature.

Among some of the wilder rumours is the claim made by some Korean media companies which suggest that the Mix 4 will have a foldable screen. This is a rumour to take with a very large pinch of salt, however. We’re almost certain to see a new Samsung folding phone during 2019, but there’s little evidence so far that Xiaomi will release a similar handset at any point this year.
