Apple to launch three new iPhones, including a Pro model, report suggests

This year’s Apple event will be one for the ages, with three new iPhones, a smartwatch and its largest laptop in years being unveiled

Apple’s September events always generate lots of fanfare, but this year is gearing up to be more incendiary than ever. The company is introducing some big shakeups to its line of hardware, including the iPhone, iPad, MacBook and Apple Watch.

A new report from Bloomberg suggests that we’ll see no less than three new iPhones, including an iPhone “Pro”, in keeping with Apple’s MacBook and iPad Pro ranges. Citing people “familiar with the situation,” the publication suggested the new handsets will start selling in September, serving to bolster the company’s final-quarter sales.

The new Pro handsets are expected to replace the iPhone Xs and Xs Max as Apple’s top-of-the-range iPhones. The Cupertino-based company isn’t the only tech giant to revert to more classic branding this week; Android Q turned out not to be Android Quality Street as we’d anticipated, but rather Android 10, as Google’s mobile operating system bucked its trend of naming successive generations of Android after desserts. Sigh.

The iPhone Pro handsets are rumoured to have a brand new camera system designed to capture ultra-wide-angle photos via a third sensor, and its functionality in low-light environments is tipped to be better as well. Users will be able to retouch apply effects and reframe videos during live recording, with the quality of video expected to edge towards professional levels.

Features-wise, Apple appears to have some quite astonishing things lined up: rumours suggest that the new iPhones will be markedly better-protected against water damage, with all-new waterproofing to elongate that crucial 30-minute safe window. A reverse wireless charging system is also on the cards, which will permit users to charge AirPods via an optional wireless charging case, à la Samsung flagships.

Also hotly rumoured for Apple’s September event is a new smartwatch, the Apple Watch Series 5. In fact, one tidbit that’s been doing the rounds is that Apple will introduce two new Series 5 models: one in ceramic and one in titanium, both available in 40mm and 44mm face options.

It doesn’t look like Apple’s left the trusty MacBook out of the upgrade roster, either. In what will be the MacBook Pro’s first overhaul in three years, Apple is expected to unveil one of its largest laptops to date, measuring over 16in diagonally. Meanwhile, the iPad Pro is expected to receive a high-spec upgrade in the form of an updated camera system and faster chipset.

Apple fans on a budget shouldn’t despair: a new entry-level iPad is expected to launch in September (although don’t expect bargain basement prices).

Naturally, we’ll be covering the Apple event when it rolls around at an expected date of 10 September, so be sure to check back in for front-line coverage.
