Acer Liquid Z4 announced, looks to challenge Moto G for budget supremacy

Acer's second Mobile World Congress launch is a budget smartphone with the specifications and features that could rival Motorola's bargain basement Moto G

Acer is preparing to introduce two new smartphones at next week’s Mobile World Congress, but unlike the mid-range Liquid E3 the Liquid Z4 is a strictly budget handset designed to take on the might of Motorola thanks to a seriously bargain price.

First impressions: Acer Liquid Z4 Hands-on review

A compact smartphone with a 4in screen, the Liquid Z4 might be smaller than a Moto G but sill comes equipped with a dual-core 1.3GHz processor, 4GB of internal storage and a 5-megapixel rear camera with LED flash.

A full set of specifications has yet to be released, so we don’t know what the screen resolution will be or how much memory the handset will have – that will have to wait until MWC kicks off next week. We do know that the front-facing speaker uses DTS Sound technology, and that Android 4.2 will be augmented with AcerFloat apps for multitasking.

Like the Liquid E3, the Liquid Z4 will also include Acer’s new Liquid user interface, with skinned icons and a new visual style that will sit on top of the default Android 4.2 Jelly Bean UI. There’s no mention of whether Android 4.4 KitKat will be coming at a later date.

Set to launch in a choice of black or white colours, the Liquid Z4 should be on sale throughout Europe in April for an RRP of €99. That translates to roughly £80 here in the UK, which would make it almost £40 cheaper than a Moto G. We’ll be taking a closer look when the get to Barcelona for Mobile World Congress next week.
