HTC Desire 310 – Another budget handset looking to dethrone the Moto G

HTC's newest handset looks to take on the Moto G, but it'll have to be cheap

The Motorola Moto G was such a revelation in terms of value for money that every new budget phone is being compared against it, fairly or not. The latest pretender to the throne is the HTC Desire 310, which looks to come in just below our current Budget Buy award winner in terms of specifications.

The chipset inside is a 1.3GHz quad-core MediaTek MT6582M, paired with a respectable 1GB of RAM. It will be fine of day-to-day use but don’t expect the slickest experience or great 3D gaming.

The handset runs Android 4.2, which is disappointing for a new phone, and puts paid to rumours that Google would not be allowing manufacturers to release handsets using older versions of the OS.

The 4.5in screen has a basic 854×480 resolution, well short of the 1,280×720 on the Moto G. Above it is a basic VGA camera, while on the back is a 5-megapixel main camera – one place where it does match the Moto G. It’s one advantage is that there’s lots of potential space to store your photos, videos and music, with the 4GB of internal storage upgradeable via micro SD by up to 32GB.

It may have a fairly pedestrian spec, but it looks pretty smart, very simple design with onscreen buttons and just the camera lens on the back, no flash here. It’s around the same size as the Moto G at 132x68x11.3mm, so not the slimmest of phones, and it weighs a fairly typical 140g. Inside the 2,000mAh battery is a good size and battery life should be excellent from this little handset.

The HTC Desire 310 looks to be a decent little budget handset, however we haven’t got pricing details yet and anything much over £100 will sink the handset, or at least as long the Motorola Moto G is still available for the bargain price of just £130.

The Desire 310 will be available in numerous colours from April, from O2, Vodafone and Carphone Warehouse.
