Griffin is turning the iPad into an interactive kids drawing book with the Crayola ColourStudio HD and iMarker.
The concept is a fairly simple one: let kids use the ColourStudio HD app to pick their favourite Crayola colours and colour-in the story books. However, it’s the implementation that really makes this product stand out.One of the problems with kids and the iPad is that the touchscreen normally means that any slight brush of a hand in a colouring app would end up with random dashes of colour everywhere. With the ColourStudio HD, the screen is disabled and will only work with the iMarker – kind of like a giant Crayola crayon with batteries.Colouring in can be set so that a colour can’t fall outside of the lines, or for older children that want to practice their colouring dexterity, free-form colouring. All of the story books to be coloured in are interactive – for example, in the Monster scenario, shaking the iPad causes the closet door to open. Finished scenarios can be shared online, saved and printed out to keep.
The final app will also have dot-to-dot as well as blank pages for kids to create their own works of art on. The iMarker will be available in May and will cost a pretty reasonable £20, while the App is a free download. It will come with 30 sets to colour-in, and this will be added to.
