How to watch the Primetime Emmy Awards 2019

It’s showtime! Here’s how you can watch Sunday’s Primetime Emmy Awards in Los Angeles live from anywhere in the world

Now in its 71st year, the Primetime Emmy Awards showcase the very best of TV, from British newcomers that made their way over the pond (Fleabag) to all-American Amazon originals (The Marvelous Mrs Maisel).

This season marked the curtain call of some of our favourite shows, most notably Game of Thrones and The Big Bang Theory. Regardless of how you’ll remember GoT’s final season, it was a television masterpiece, so we’re not surprised that it’s nominated for 32 awards.

Apart from Best Drama Series, both Kit Harrington and Emilia Clarke are nominated for Best Actor and Actress, while the Best Supporting Actor and Actress category is littered with familiar names from the HBO show, including Maisie Williams, Sophie Turner, Lena Heady, Peter Dinklage and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau.

British series Killing Eve has also bagged some impressive nominations. Both Jodie Comer and Sandra Oh are in the running for Best Lead Actress, while the show is in the running for Best Drama Series.

While HBO leads the awards ceremony with 137 nominations for shows like Game of Thrones, Chernobyl and Veep, streaming service Netflix is close behind with 117 nominations for its series, including Ozark, Russian Doll and House of Cards. Amazon Prime is slowly catching up with 47 nominations this year, including for the aforementioned The Marvelous Mrs Maisel and Fleabag.

The 71st Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony will be held on Sunday, 22 September, at the Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles, California. Live coverage will start at 8pm ET (that’s 23, September, 1am BST) and the event will be broadcast live on FOX in the US. Backstage Live will keep viewers up-to-date on everything that happens off-camera.

How to watch the Emmy Awards 2019 in the UK and abroad: Stream online

No UK channel is broadcasting the Primetime Emmy Awards live, so if you’re in the UK and want to watch the 2019 Emmy Awards, it’s not quite as simple but still possible.

Many of the above options will be geographically restricted to the US, meaning if you’re trying to view Fox’s website from outside of the country, you won’t be able to. Some streaming apps also allow you to access Fox content, such as Hulu, PlayStation Vue, Fubo.tv and YouTube TV but you’ll need a VPN to access them from outside of the US.

By using a VPN, you can essentially trick your computer into thinking that it’s in a different country to the one you’re actually in, meaning you can access content from other countries. We’ve tried and tested a number of VPNs and these are the ones we’ve found to work the fastest, with the greatest access to content across the globe.

ExpressVPN: This VPN is by far our favourite, with the fastest connection speeds to UK, US and Australia and access to all the popular streaming sites, websites and apps. There’s also 24/7 customer support if you’re having trouble accessing content, a 30-day no questions asked money-back guarantee and if you sign up now, you can get three months free and save 49% when you opt for a one year plan.

Buy ExpressVPN now

NordVPN: NordVPN is another service we rate highly. There’s a seven-day free trial, and like ExpressVPN, you get 24/7 customer support, which is great if something goes awry. It unblocks most popular streaming services and most impressively, has been independently audited to prove it doesn’t log or store any identifiable user data. If you sign up to a three-year plan now, you can save a massive 70% too.

Buy NordVPN now

To use a VPN on any of the streaming apps we’ve suggested above you just need to follow these simple steps.

  1. Set up an account with either Fox, Hulu, YouTube or one of the other streaming services broadcasting the Primetime Emmy Awards.
  2. Install either ExpressVPN or NordVPN on your device and set up an account.
  3. Choose a US IP address from the ones listed.
  4. Visit the Fox website or YouTube TV, sign up for a free trial and you should be able to start watching.

If you’re not fussed about watching the 71st Primetime Emmy Awards live in the UK, you can catch it on Sky One from 11pm BST on Monday 23 September.
