New Dell XPS 17 and XPS 15 announced alongside Alienware Area 51 laptops

Dell has pulled the wraps off a veritable pile of new high-powered laptops, headed up by the Dell XPS 17. This marks the first time the firm has sold an XPS this big in ten years.

Dell claims the new XPS 17 is the world’s most compact 17in laptop, although it’ll have to be going some to beat the LG Gram 17 (2020). It comes with a suitably high-powered selection of components, including 10th generation Intel CPUs and discrete Nvidia graphics up to GeForce RTX 2060.

The Dell XPS 17 will be joined in the range by a new XPS 15 laptop. Taking design cues from the Dell XPS 13 (2020) the new XPS 15 has been redesigned “from the ground up” in its first major overhaul for five years.

The XPS 15 has a larger screen than before, uprated audio, a thinner chassis, Intel 10th gen processors and Nvidia GeForce GTX graphics.

The XPS 15 will be available from 14 May 2020 at prices starting from £1,599. The Dell XPS 17 will be available from June 2020 with prices starting at $1,500 (UK prices TBC).

Alienware latops also get a refresh

That’s not all for new Dell launches, however. Dell is also refreshing its hyper-powered Alienware Area 51-m laptop, its Alienware m15 and M17 machines. Not much has changed on the design front – although the paintwork has been updated with a “high-performance clear coat” intended to reduce stains – but Dell has changed pretty much everything else.

Naturally, the new Alienware machines get upgraded internals, including 10th-gen Intel CPUs and Nvidia GeForce RTX Super graphics, but there are other improvements, including a better voltage regulation system for the GPU and a significantly upgraded cooling system with bigger, better fans to keep those temperatures down to a manageable level. The top-end configurations take this a step further with vapor-chamber cooling tech.

The new Alienware m15 and m17 will be available from 21 May in the UK from £1,349 and £1,599 and the Area-51m will be available in the US on 9 June from $3,050.
