CES 2020: From the PS5 to the Galaxy S10 Lite – everything we’re expecting from Sony, Samsung, Apple and more

The New Year festivities might be over, but don’t despair: CES 2020 is just around the corner. 

Every January, the tech world descends on Las Vegas for the annual Consumer Electronics Show where the upcoming year’s products and technologies are unveiled by some of the biggest and most innovative brands on the planet. 

Here are the key details:

• Where? Las Vegas Convention Center
• When?  7-10 January 2020 – although the press day is 6 January so expect announcements as early as 4 January

The main CES 2020 show is held at the Las Vegas Convention Center but brands also occupy most hotels and suites on the strip to display their products. 

Below we’ve detailed what we’re expecting from individual brands including Sony, Apple, LG and more. We’re also going to be at the show and will be covering the most impressive and significant announcements so keep checking back to stay up-to-date.

CES 2020: Everything we expect to see

Sony: Is the PS5 coming? 

The biggest buzz surrounding this year’s event, other than the decision to make Ivanka Trump a keynote speaker, has centred on Sony and whether the Japanese firm will use CES 2020 to finally pull the covers from the PlayStation 5.

 As we welcomed in 2020, Sony dropped its CES 2020 teaser page which simply said: “The future is coming” before adding: “At CES 2020 Sony is unveiling a unique vision of the future, bringing creativity and technology together like never before, to unleash new sensations and emotions.” 

The next-generation PS5 console has been rumoured for years and after a spate of official announcements, Sony has confirmed we’re now within a year of the PS5 release date.

However, if previous CES events and Sony launches are anything to go by, the tech giant will use CES 2020 to refresh its TV and audio range; we’ll see new Sony phones at Mobile World Congress 2020, and the grand PS5 unveiling will take place during a separate and standalone Sony event later in the year.

With this in mind, expect an 8K TV refresh and the WH-1000XM4 noise-cancelling headphones at CES 2020 when theSony CES 2020 press conference live stream goes live at 17:00 PST (1:00am GMT) on 6 January.

Apple: Privacy news

Apple historically snubs CES in favour of its own launch events and this year is no different. However, CES 2020 is set to be the first time the Californian tech giant has had a presence at the show in recent years as the company’s Senior Director of Global Privacy, Jane Horvath, is due to take part in a roundtable on Tuesday afternoon. 

The roundtable titled What Do Consumers Want? starts at 1:00pm PST (9:00pm GMT).

Samsung: Note 10 Lite and an 8K TV refresh

Samsung tends to use CES 2020 to unveil the latest in its display technology. Last year, it saved the announcement of its 292in modular The Wall Luxury TV until June, but this display built on the launch of the original The Wall unveiled at CES in 2018.

As 8K is set to be a major talking point of CES, Samsung will use the event to refresh its 8K range and is likely to unveil its first models fitted with the official 8K Ultra HD logo, showing that they meet the Consumer Technology Association’s standard which came into force on 1 January 2020.

There is also talk that Samsung could use CES 2020 to unveil the Galaxy S10 Lite and Note 10 Lite.

Samsung typically saves mobile updates for its standalone Unpacked event ahead of Mobile World Congress but considering these models are variations of phones released last year, Samsung may not want to detract from the Samsung Galaxy S11 and will announce the Lite models early. 

LG: 8K TVs, clever home appliances and laptops

LG is hosting the first conference of the press day on 6 January and it’s expected to be full of announcements covering LG Electronics’ many ranges including TVs, home appliances, soundbars, laptops and even robots.

We already know that LG will be using the event to showcase its new “real 8K” TVs a la Samsung. By getting in early on press day, this could make the LG Signature and NanoCell 8K TVs the first TVs of CES 2020 to run the 8K Ultra HD standard. You can read more about the new LG 8K TVs here.

LG also jumped the gun and announced a major update to its Gram laptop range ahead of CES 2020, which includes the LG Gram 17 (17Z90N), LG Gram 15 (15Z90N), LG Gram 14 (14Z90N) and 14-inch LG Gram 2-in-1 (14T90N). The LG Gram 17 was already common knowledge after LG announced it has won a CES 2020 Innovation Award but the other models are new.

Each is powered by Intel’s 10th Generation processor with Iris Plus graphics and up to 24GB of dual-channel DDR4 memory. They come with double the graphics processing power of last year’s models and both the 17Z90N and 15Z90N have larger 80Wh batteries. 

The LG Electronics conference kicks off at 8:00am PST (4:00pm GMT). 

Lenovo at CES 2020

Like LG, Lenovo usually unveils a whole host of new products at each year’s Consumer Electronic Show and CES 2020 is set to follow suit. Rumours hint at new ThinkPads and ThinkBooks – including a folding ThinkPad update.

Dell: XPS 13 and Alienware updates

As has become a CES tradition, the Dell XPS range has been updated ahead of CES 2020. The XPS 13 (2020) range runs on 10th generation Intel Core processors: i3-1005G1, i5-1035G1 or i7-1065G7, come with 4GB, 8GB, 16GB or 32GB of RAM and 256GB, 512GB, 1TB or 2TB PCIe storage. Elsewhere, they support Wi-Fi 6 and go on sale on 7 January.

Elsewhere, gamers should keep an eye out for Alienware updates, and new Dell monitors are also rumoured to make an appearance.

Intel: Comet Lake partners

Product updates from the likes of Dell and Lenovo are usually accompanied by the launch of new Intel processors.

Its conference takes place towards the end of the press day so expect more details about the company’s 10th-generation technology, Comet Lake, including which laptops are being powered by the recently announced chipset. 

OnePlus: Concept One and OnePlus TV updates

We already know OnePlus is using CES 2020 to unveil its first “concept phone“, imaginatively titled Concept One, after the Chinese phone maker announced it would be hosting a special event at the show. 

Beyond the name, little else is known with OnePlus explaining: “The name itself is a clear promise that this device is the first in a series to come and shows OnePlus’ commitment to applied, innovative technology.”

There’s also rumour CES 2020 will be used to launch the OnePlus 8 Lite and discuss further release plans for the OnePlus TV.

Qualcomm: Snapdragon 865 partners

Qualcomm saw out 2019 with the launch of its next-generation Snapdragon 865 platform and we’d expect to see many of the flagship mobile devices being launched at CES 2020 running on the processor.

Qualcomm also tends to use large shows to talk more about its automotive platform and its 5G plans.
