I’ve tested most flagship over-ear headphones – this is the pair I recommend buying on Prime Day

Our favourite over-ear headphones are available for an all-time low price of £285 during Amazon's Prime Day sale

The opening day of this year’s Prime Day sale is a little bit special. Not only is it the day after the resignation of the UK Prime Minister and the day the England men’s football team can cement a place in the knockout stages of the World Cup, but there’s an incredible Sony WH-1000XM6 Prime Day deal to enjoy.

The order of importance of those things is a matter of personal opinion, but I’m only going to be writing about one of those three historic events here. It is, of course, the all-time low price of £285 that Amazon is selling the Black finish of the class-leading WH-1000XM6.

I didn’t review the sixth generation of Sony’s flagship over-ear noise cancellers; that pleasure went to Jonathan Bray. But I did borrow his pair to compare them to the 1000X The Collexion, which cost £550. And in my review of Sony’s most premium headphones yet, I said: “The WH-1000XM6 are not far behind in the sound and comfort stakes, block out noise far more effectively and, at two-thirds the price, are a much better buy overall.”

I was already recommending them at full price, and now they’re available in Black for £285, Sand Pink for £288, and Silver, Sandstone and Midnight Blue for £300. Those prices are well below the average prices for each variant on Amazon over the past 180 days. And £100 less than they cost when Jonny Bizzle gave them our Best Buy award.

That’s still a lot of money, and not the kind of sum you spend on a whim. I know this as I recently bought a Switch 2 after months of deliberation and price watching. But there are some products that more than justify their cost, and both the Switch 2 and Sony WH-1000XM6 fall into that category.

The WH-1000XM6 offer the smartest noise-cancelling system in the business, adapting to your attenuation needs based on what you’re doing and where you are. They support high-resolution streaming over LDAC and sound incredible, no matter what material you throw at them. They’re lightweight and ridiculously comfortable, can be folded (unlike the fifth-generation iteration), have decent battery life, and come in a durable carrying case.

Then they’ve got useful features like Sony’s Speak-to-Chat, Quick Attention mode, Background Music mode, along with support for a Cinema spatial audio mode, DSEE upscaling, sound presets and a customisable EQ.

No other headphones out there can match the Sony WH-1000XM6 in terms of a combination of features and performance, and they’re the only over-ears you should think about buying if you’ve got a budget of £300 this Prime Day.

There are loads of other Prime Day deals in other product categories worth considering, however, and we’ll cover as many of them as possible between now and when Prime Day wraps up at 11.59pm on Friday, 26 June.

We’ve already put together a Prime Day hub documenting the top ten deals across home and tech, and have four category-specific roundups, too:
