This Black Friday tablet deal is staggeringly good
You can save £300 on the Intel Core i5 model of Huawei’s excellent convertible tablet, the MateBook E, for Black Friday
Forget the Microsoft Surface Pro, the Huawei MateBook E is the convertible tablet to buy right now thanks to this stunning Black Friday tablet deal.
Huawei has slashed the price of the Intel Core i5-powered version, which comes with a foldable and detachable keyboard, from £999 down to just £600, and is even throwing in a backpack with an RRP of £130 to sweeten the deal.
We reviewed the MateBook E at its launch price of £999 and gave it a five-star rating and our Recommended award, praising its display, cameras and the keyboard that comes with the model we’re highlighting here.
Let’s talk about that gorgeous display first. It’s a sumptuous 12.6in OLED panel with a 2,560 x 1,600 resolution and can hit peak brightness figures of 600cd/m² when the ambient light detector senses direct sunlight and engages High Brightness Mode. Coverage of the sRGB and DCI-P3 colour gamuts is excellent, as is the accuracy when reproducing colours within those gamuts.
The Core i5 chipset powering the MateBook E does cause some thermal issues, but the device’s fans are effective and practically silent, while performance is nippy enough to get through general productivity tasks with relative ease. It probably won’t come as a surprise that you won’t be doing any serious gaming on the MateBook E, but a bit of casual mobile gaming isn’t out of the question if that’s your bag.
When it comes to taking photos and recording video, the MateBook E is a lot more capable, however. The 8MP webcam can shoot video up to a maximum of 1080p at 60fps, while the rear 12.6MP camera can record in 4K at 30fps and has a usable flash.
A single USB-C port, mediocre battery life and the lack of a memory card slot prevented the MateBook E from scooping our Best Buy award but those relatively minor shortcomings are easily forgotten at this new Black Friday price.
The Intel Core i3 model is also on offer and will set you back £450, down from its original price of £600. Huawei is bundling it with its smart magnetic keyboard and the same backpack that comes with the i5 model, both of which are very welcome extras.
